Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection F Toei Animation

"Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection 'F'" has just been released in the U.S. and has already broken the record of being the first indie animated film to hit the domestic top 10 anime releases of all time. According to a report from Deadline, the film has now earned $6.3 million since it's limited release last Tuesday, Aug. 4.

The film originally had just one showtime in less than 200 theaters nationwide but due to its growing success, FUNimation executives have been able to increase to an estimated 800 theaters. The report also states that "Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection 'F'" has beaten "Shaun the Sheep Movie" to earn $4 million despite the latter opening in 2,320 theaters.

On its premiere, the film earned a total of $1.97 million and continued to earn another $1.6 million on Wednesday, Aug. 5. By the end of the weekend, the film had earned a total of $5.58 million domestically.

"Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection 'F'" has now taken the No. 9 spot on the top 10 domestic anime releases, overtaking Hayao Miyazaki's "The Wind Rises" and pushing "Howl's Moving Castle" off the list.

According to a report from IGN, "Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection 'F'" was made on a $5 million budget and is expected to earn a total of $20 million before the week is over due to its growing success in theaters and the popularity of the brand in the United States.

The film has already earned over $52 million in Japan where it also beat "Furious 7" for the biggest movie opening in Japan.

"Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection 'F'" directly follows the events of "Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods" where Beerus decides to not destroy Earth after a satisfying battle with Goku. In the new film, followers of Frieza use the Dragon Balls to revive their master and start a war on Earth against Goku and his allies.
