'Doctor Who' season 9 in 2015? Christmas Special in the works after season 8 finale

Wise words from the Doctor himself Facebook

BBC's science-fiction television series "Doctor Who" is one grand episode away from a fiery culmination and this is enough to psych everyone up. The excitement will finally peak on the release of season-ender "Death in Heaven" on Nov. 8, but deep into the attention nucleus dwells the greater anticipation for season 9 of the long-running program.

According to the executive producer of the show, Steven Moffat, the renewal season will be launched in 2015, following the same format employed in the current season.

"We're not going to do splits [in series eight], and the same format will repeat exactly the following year like that - so it will be the traditional form," Moffat said via Franchise Herald.

With the statement, it is safe to say that the ninth season will invade households by August next year. Fans can look forward to Scottish actor Peter Capaldi in complete adventure mode as the time-traveling humanoid alien.

"It's a huge privilege and hugely exciting. I remember when I first came into the Tardis, I had to be very patient as the very nice props guys showed me how to work the Tardis. I was thinking, 'I know how to work the Tardis. I've known for a long time, probably longer than you, so you don't need to tell me!' Every day is amazing," the 56-year-old actor and film director said via Franchise Herald.

Backtracking to the show's advent in 1993, several actors have already given life to the doctor before Capaldi, which now makes him the twelfth actor to portray the doctor. He took on the role in 2010 and now his iconic role, to date, is the latest upshot of the regeneration process, which is a theme introduced and made famous by the show.

Actors that came before Capaldi are William Hartnell, Patrick Troughton, Jon Pertwee, Tom Baker, Peter Davison, Colin Baker, Sylvester McCoy, Paul McGann, Christopher Eccleston, David Tennant, and Matt Smith.

Meanwhile, a Christmas special is also being cooked up so viewers can stay tuned for that, but the imminent season 8 finale will star Jenna Coleman along with guest stars Sanjeev Bhaskar, Jemma Redgrave, Ingrid Oliver, Michelle Gomez and Chris Addison.
