'Destiny 2' release date news: launch of second installment confirmed for 2017

 Bungie, Activision

"Destiny" has proven to be a big success for Bungie, the developers behind the original "Halo" franchise, and as reported by IGN, the company and publisher Activision has officially announced "Destiny 2," which launches in 2017.

According to the report, Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg stated that the majority of the staff members at Bungie are busy working on "Destiny 2," which means very few employees are left to work on the final few patches and updates for the original "Destiny" and its DLC.

Once the "Rise of Iron" DLC launches for the first game it is likely the remaining staff members will be moving on with the otheres to work on "Destiny 2."

While no specific release window has been stated many fans speculate that the sequel will release in September 2017 given that the first game also launched in September, making it an appropriate title for the franchise's anniversary.

Forbes reports that the sequel could go in two directions. There is the possibility of "Destiny 2" being more akin to a large expansion or DLC that allows players to use the same characters and gear from "Destiny" it is also possible that it will be a completely new game set in a different locale and require players to start from scratch.

There is also the possibility of "Destiny 2" working something in between. Just like how "Dragon Age 2" is a new game in comparison to "Dragon Age: Origins" in terms of mechanics, setting and characters it still allows players to import a save file from the latter in order to carry over some gear or other benefits for the sequel.

This system has also been done for games like the "Mass Effect" series as well as the "Suikoden" series. Bungie has yet to announce whether "Destiny 2" is an expansion of the first game, a true sequel or something in between, allowing save files to be imported.
