'Constantine' animated series news: Key artwork and trailer released

An animated TV series of DC's "Constantine" will be released by CW Seed on 2018.

Matt Ryan, who portrayed the role of John Constantine in the NBC TV series adaptation that ran from October 2014 to February 2015 with 13 full episodes, will be reprising his role for this animated series. Ryan did a crossover episode in "Arrow" last year and lent his voice as the reluctant paranormal detective in the animated movie "Justice League Dark."

Although fans clearly showed support and interest for the NBC show two years ago, it was discontinued due to poor ratings. Critics called the TV show uneven because while the plot was solid, the pacing was not – mainly pointing out shifting of episodes to be confusing rather than thought-provoking.

CW Seed has released a key artwork that does not look any different from the artwork fans were treated to when Constantine teamed-up with Batman in the "Justice League Dark" animated movie back in January. Whether this is a good thing or not for the show, fans can only tell once it airs next year.

Last Oct. 8, Warner Bros. released a 3-minute trailer of the new show in their channel. The trailer opened with Constantine meeting up with demons in an abandoned Church. It then escalated to a bloody fight between him and another demon dressed like an Egyptian king. As always, it seemed that Constantine was trying to hit two birds with one stone. The trailer was also revealed in the New York Comic-Con 2017.

The five demons in the video are also the same ones seen on the key artworks revealed by CW Seed. Obliviously, the names of these demons will be revealed, but fans are more hyped at the fact that since this is an animated series, other heroes from the dark and paranormal side of the DC universe might appear.

JM DeMattels will be writing the script with Doug Murphy manning the helm. The show will be produced by David S. Goyer, Sarah Schechter, and Greg Berlanti.
