The government body that oversees the Catholic Church in China is reportedly investigating a Chinese bishop who announced his resignation as soon as he had been ordained.
Bishop Ma Daqin was ordained into the Catholic Patriotic Association in a ceremony on Saturday but then went on to announce his resignation before the 1,200-strong congregation in an embarrassing snub to Beijing.
Announcing his resignation, the bishop said he wanted to devote his heart and soul to episcopal ministry and evangelism.
The CPA, which is not recognised by the Vatican, is reportedly investigating the bishop.
According to the Associated Press, the CPA is investigating violations of regulations in the selection of bishops in relation to Saturday's ordination.
Ma has not been seen since Saturday and is reportedly being held in isolation at a seminary.
His resignation is likely to increase the strain on relations between the Vatican and China, who remain at loggerheads over who should have the final say on the appointment of bishops.
Ma was next in line to take over as head bishop of the Shanghai diocese after current Bishop Jin Luxian, 96.
