BMS Aids Peru in Severe Weather Crisis

BMS World Mission has extended a helping hand to Peru after a spell of extreme weather prompted the country's government to declare a state of emergency in several states.

A grant of $1000 has been approved by BMS to go towards relief efforts by the Civil Christian Protection (PCC), a Peruvian relief organisation which counts BMS partner the Evangelical Baptist Convention of Peru as one of its members.

After several weeks of extremely cold weather, the government has declared a state of emergency across an area covering almost half of Peru and including many of the most deprived regions.

The PCC is now hard at work in these areas bringing warm clothing and non-perishable food items to people living in the remote mountainous district of Pichacani in the province of Puno.

The BMS grant will pay for blankets, boots, shawls and gloves.

"Even a relatively small grant like this one can have an important impact in a disaster," said BMS Manager for Mission Partnerships, David McLellan.

"In responding to disasters, speed of response and working with trusted partners on the ground is often as important as the scale of the assistance. An extreme climate event is just one type of disaster our supporters can respond to through their giving to BMS."
