"The Big Bang Theory" season 9 ended with a lot of cliffhangers but the biggest one was when Amy (Mayim Bialik) and Sheldon (Jim Parsons) broke up right before the latter could reveal his intention to propose. A new report from Entertainment Weekly confirms that the two won't immediately get back together.
Fans are hoping that Sheldon and Amy would get back together but executive producer Steve Molaro stated that the latter is sticking to her decision to keep reasonable distance from Sheldon. This opens the doors for her to start dating other guys.
"Right now, she really wants to take a step back and think about where she is, where they are and how she wants to move forward in her life," Molaro told EW. "I don't think she's necessarily in a rush to find another man, but I don't think she's ruling it out either."
Season 9 might see Amy and Sheldon becoming friends again but based on Molaro's statement, they might not get together romantically for some time. It appears like Sheldon's engagement ring will have to stay in hiding for a little while longer until the showrunners entangle the two once again.
As for the other romantic couple that saw a downward cliffhanger, Penny (Kaley Cuoco) and Leonard (Johnny Galecki) were on their way to Las Vegas for an on-the-spot wedding when Leonard admitted that he cheated on Penny while on an expedition.
However, TVLine reports that CBS is looking to cast a male actor in his 50's, which many speculate to be a minister at a chapel. If this is true, then it looks like season 9 may begin with Leonard and Penny reaching the chapel after all, but this doesn't necessarily mean they will be able to push through with the wedding.
"The Big Bang Theory" returns for season 9 on Sept. 21.
