As reported by Collider, Ubisoft Motion Pictures, the film division of the video game company known for games such as "Assassin's Creed" and "Prince of Persia," has released two new images showcasing Michael Fassbender in the upcoming "Assassin's Creed" live-action film.
The first image centers on Fassbender in the modern day where he plays a character named Callum Lynch, who is forced by an organization known as the Templars to utilize a machine known as the Animus in order to visit the memories of his ancestor, memories locked in his DNA, in order to locate an ancient and magical artifact.
The image shown further hints that as Callum explores his ancestor's memories Callum gains the abilities and skills that his ancestor once had. In this particular image Callum is wielding a crossbow and is surrounded by several enemies, likely during an event after he had entered the Animus.
As for the second image, it focuses on Fassbender portraying Callum's ancestor from the 15th century, an assassin known as Aguilar. Den of Geek reports that Aguilar joins the ranks of the assassins just in time as the Spanish Inquisition begins.
It is further stated in the report that the image of Callum wielding the crossbow indicates that over time he may have the skillset needed to fight back against the Templars before they can discover the whereabouts of the artifact. By letting Callum use the Animus to merge with his ancestor Aguilar they have also allowed Callum to become a more powerful enemy.
Ubisoft, in a separate report from Cinema Blend, has also come forward in explaining that while they expect the movie to not be a big blockbuster hit given it is based on a video game franchise and is launching a week after the release of "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story," the studios intend for it to be a critically acclaimed movie that could continue moving the franchise forward.
"Assassin's Creed" opens in theaters on Dec. 21.
