Apple is primarily known for their mobile devices like the iPhone and iPad, but they have been working on other computer devices, most notably their iMac and MacBook products. New reports now reveal they are also looking into developing smart glasses similar to the Google Glass but now with integrated augmented reality features.

According to a report from Bloomberg, Apple has quietly been gathering experts on AR technology in the past and has been in conversation with potential suppliers for near-eye displays. They have reportedly been collaborating with companies like Flyby, Metaio, and PrimeSense, all of which are experts on AR and related technology such as computer vision and 3D mapping.

The Verge further reveals that the main goal is to create glasses that can easily connect to an iPhone and then display the information on the pair of smart glasses.

It is further stated that Apple CEO Tim Cook has been teasing AR technology for some time. Cook did explain that while VR technology was the primary focus for some companies, such as Google and Facebook with the DayDream VR and Oculus Rift, AR could have wider applications.

However, this type of technology still has a long road ahead of it. It is stated that the Google Glass is regarded as a massive failure, and it goes to show how much improvement this type of technology has yet to develop. After Google failed to find success with Google Glass, they immediately turned to Virtual Reality with the DayDream VR headset.

Google Glass also suffered from privacy and safety issues, and it is still uncertain how Apple aims to overcome these obstacles. The company also has yet to announce a proper timeframe when people could expect their AR smart glasses to first hit the market, although speculations suggest a late 2018 or 2019 release.
