With Motorola and HTC taking the helm in making the Nexus 6 and Nexus 9, respectively, which are the first devices to pack the latest Android 5.0 Lollipop, it is a no-brainer that the two mobile manufacturers will be the first third party companies whose devices will receive the new OS.

Once Nexus 9 and Nexus 6 become available in major markets, it is expected that Google will roll out the Android 5.0 Lollipop OS update to Nexus 4, 5, 7, 7 (2013), and 10. Then, Google Play Edition devices will receive the OS update.

Motorola has confirmed that a number of its devices will receive the Android 5.0 Lollipop including the first and second generation of Moto X and Moto G. Moto G LTE and the Moto E as well as the Droid Ultra, Droid Maxx, and Droid Mini are reported to get the new Android OS update. However, Motorola did not release a specific timeline of the software upgrade.

HTC, on the other hand, confirmed in June that several of its devices will receive the latest mobile software from Google. The Taiwanese manufacturer announced that the HTC One (M7) and (M8) models will run with Android 5.0 within 90 days of receiving the software from Google.

However, both Motorola and HTC did not confirm whether they have received the new OS yet from Google to make their own customizations and to roll it out to their respective devices.

Android Lollipop packs a "new design language" which is dubbed as Material Design. The new design is way cleaner, and it has new triangle, circle and square navigation buttons.

The mobile software also boasts new features such as improved notifications, lockscreen, multi-tasking, notification bar, and better battery. The new OS is also expected to improve the security of the new devices as it will enable users to unlock their smartphone when they're physically near a device like an Android Wear smartwatch. Thus, users will be able to open their devices without the need to enter a password.
