Sony is currently rolling out the latest Android 4.4.4 Kitkat OS update to its Xperia handsets.

To the delight of many Sony Xperia users, the phone maker is now rolling out the latest update to its devices. Google recently slipped the Android 4.4.4 Kitkat OS update amidst the buzz about the upcoming Android L and Android One program.

The Nexus and Google Play Edition devices were the first gadgets that received the new Android 4.4.4 Kitkat OS update last July 25. According to reports, the Nexus and GPEs received Over-The-Air (OTA) udpates.

The update is 2.5MB and is claimed to bring fixes to security issues such as the OpenSSL bug. "The software update will upgrade your Nexus 5 to 4.4.4, which improves performance, security, stability and fixes bugs," according to the update page flashed on the devices.

The Android 4.4.4 Kitkat OS update is a crucial update compared to the previous Android 4.4.3 Kitkat as the former brings the overall version of KTU84P firmware. The latest update brought very minimal changes to the devices such as slight changes to Chromium Web browser and WebView. Kitkat OS also brings with it better power managements, location based Wi-Fi and queuing background data along with better management for low batteries.

The list of Xperia handsets that will receive the Android 4.4.4 Kitkat OS update are:

  • Xperia Z1
  • Xperia Z Ultra
  • Xperia X
  • Xperia SP
  • Xperia T
  • Xperia TX
  • Xperia V

The Sony Xperia Z2 is the first Sony smartphone to get the fourth and final Kitkat OS update followed by Xperia Z1 and Z Ultra handsets. Lastly, other Sony Xperia smartphones will follow suit.

The Android 4.4.4 Kitkat OS update in Sony Xperia phones will be rolled out in batches. Users can check their respective handsets for the update.

Reports added that the new interface will resemble that of the upcoming Sony Sirius. The leaked photo of the homescreen showed simple design with slight changes on the icons.
