After the Spider-Man deal between Sony and Marvel Studios was sealed, "The Amazing Spider-Man 3" was cancelled. Tom Holland is now the actor chosen to play the web-slinger, replacing Andrew Garfield, and a reboot film is already in the works. However, a recent interview with actor Dennis Leary gives insight on what the cancelled film's plot would've been.
According to an interview with IGN, Leary, who portrayed Captain Stacy in 2012's "The Amazing Spider-Man," stated that the plot of the third film involves Peter Parker aka Spider-Man using a special formula that would bring dead characters back to life. He stated that there were plans to bring Captain Stacy back in a big way.
It isn't clear if this formula would also bring back other dead characters such as Gwen Stacy, Uncle Ben Parker, and Parker's parents — although it was hinted in the second film that Peter's father is still alive. The supposed plot might not seem plausible, but a report from ComicBookMovie explains that this story was already done in the comic books.
There is a storyline in "The Ultime Spider-Man" comic books wherein the Venom symbiote isn't extraterrestial in nature but is a science experiment by Peter Parker's and Eddie Brock Jr.'s fathers. The symbiote would create the villain Venom but it's spawn, the villain Carnage, would also create clones of Gwen Stacy and other dead characters, essentially bringing them back to life.
According to the report from ComicBookMovie, there are hints that this might have been the route that Sony Pictures was going for if they had continued with the franchise before hitting the reset button. The leaked Sony emails showed that the studio executives were planning on bringing Venom and Carnage to the big screen and this would have tied with the supposed plot of "The Amazing Spider-Man 3."
The reset button has been pressed, however, and now Spider-Man will be featured alongside the Avengers and will start a new series with Tom Holland in the lead. The character is set to appear first in next year's "Captain America: Civil War" and then get a solo film by 2017.
