3 things to do to avoid holiday burnout

The holidays are the most fun time of the year, but if people aren't careful, they can easily make themselves miserable by taking on more tasks than their body can handle.

So how can people avoid holiday burnout? RYOT Studio shared some tips with the Huffington Post. The first is to schedule some well-deserved "me time." It's always a great idea to spend time with friends and family, but if people don't leave time for themselves, they will experience a worse mood and depleted energy.

Another great suggestion is working out. When people get busy, exercising becomes the least of their priorities. But when people make time for physical activities - be it a simple walk in the park or a bike ride - they reduce their level of cortisol, which is the hormone responsible for stress. Another good reason to exercise is that it helps people fall asleep more easily at night.

Lastly, power naps do wonders for the body. It only takes a minimum of 10 minutes or a maximum of 26 minutes to get the body recharged. When people take coffee before their power naps, it can even boost productivity since caffeine takes about 20 to 30 minutes to kick in.

Meanwhile, Tim Parsons from Hello Christian warned that burnouts can lead to health problems, errors, and other issues in the work front. To avoid burnout, he said that people should be proactive in combatting it.

Parsons said it was ok for people to say "no" to things they can't take on - as difficult as it might be to do so. People often have high expectations when it comes to the things they can accomplish, but Parsons said they have to learn to be realistic.

"One of the hardest things that I've seen both in the workplace and in the family is unrealistic expectations. These are either things that are wildly unrealistic or expectations that are just over the line of what can reasonably be accomplished," he said. "I don't want to get caught up in the place where I am constantly disappointed because either I or others didn't meet an expectation that was never going to happen from the beginning."
