'The Voice' season 9 cast, judges: Missy Elliott to coach Pharrell Williams' team

The lineup of coaches for the upcoming ninth season of "The Voice" is complete, with hip-hop icon Missy Elliott officially joining the show. According to a report from E! News, she will be the advisor to Pharrell Williams' team of singers.

Elliott most recently performed at the 2015 Super Bowl alongside Katy Perry and, according to a report from Entertainment Weekly, is now working on her seventh studio album. The report also states that Elliott will be releasing a new single in the near future, a song produced by Pharrell Williams. Williams is also working with her on her album.

The 44-year-old singer made her breakthrough in the music scene back in 1997 with the release of her single "The Rain," which was part of her debut album "Supa Dupa Fly." She later became renowned for her singles "Get Ur Freak On," "Work It" and "Lose Control."

Elliot's inclusion in "The Voice" will mark her return to a competitive television program since her 2008 appearance as a judge assistant in season 2 of "America's Best Dance Crew."

Meanwhile, judge Gwen Stefani has recruited singer-actress Selena Gomez as her team's advisor, while judge Blake Shelton has brought along fellow country singer Brad Paisley to mentor his team. Adam Levine, on the other hand, has recruited John Fogerty to advise his team of singers.

As reported by E! News, R&B singer Rihanna has been brought in as well to mentor all of the contestants. This role was previously filled by Taylor Swift and Nate Reuss.

Immediately following the announcement of Elliott's addition to the team, NBC released the first promotional trailer for the new season, which focuses primarily on the four judges and their interactions with each other without giving away too much about the performances and new mechanics on the show.

"The Voice" season 9 officially premieres this Sept. 21.
