'Vampire Diaries' season 7 cast update: Mama Salvatore, Heretics to wreak havoc in Mystic Falls

The Salvatore matriarch will return to bring more trouble to Mystic Falls in "The Vampire Diaries" season 7.

The Wrap exclusively reported that Annie Wersching's character Lily, Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Stefan Salvatore's (Paul Wesley) mother, will come back next season to appear in a major recurring arc in the supernatural drama.

In season 6, Mama Salvatore was released from the 1903 prison world with the help of her eldest son Damon and his then-girlfriend Elena (Nina Dobrev) and friend Bonnie (Kat Graham). But unknown to them, bringing back Lily into the present world would also bring tons of trouble, with her group called the Heretics or the dangerous witch vampires on the loose.

With the Heretics and Lily in Mystic Falls, a lot of innocent lives might be lost to satiate the hunger of the vicious group of vampires. Could the Salvatore brothers, or at least one of them, manage to stop their mother and her new family from killing in Mystic Falls?

In an interview with E! Online, "TVD" executive producer Caroline Dries said that Stefan will step up to deal with his mother, as well as take care of his heartbroken older brother.

"I'm really excited to see Stefan come into his own and he'll really take to the role of a hero, which will be really cool," Dries shared. "He's always been a hero but I think in a broader sense he'll become more heroic next season."

Damon will be one of the people that Stefan will save in "The Vampire Diaries" season 7. According to spoilers, the older Salvatore will wallow in despair after he lost his one great love Elena when Kai cursed her to deep slumber, which can only be broken once Bonnie dies. Without Elena, Damon is likely to return to being the arrogant, evil vampire that he once was at the start of the series.

But spoilers also claim that his younger brother Stefan will help him come to terms with his loss, and take Damon out of the dark place.

"The Vampire Diaries" season 7 is expected to return to The CW this fall.
