There's going to be a new direction for Disney's "The Incredibles" when the company starts working on the sequel 12 years after the release of the original movie.

Director Brad Bird — who will write and direct the sequel — confirmed as much in an interview with Entertainment Weekly.

"I don't like unwrapping presents before Christmas. It's very actively moving, and we're excited about it. [We're] trying to take it in some new directions," said Bird.

While he did not exactly give details about the plot, the director said that they have already completed the story arc and is about ¾ done with the script, which is a good thing as they are heading into the production of the movie that is slated for a 2018 release.

Bird admitted that the film scene has changed a lot since they released the first movie, and that this will factor into the direction of their development. He cited the number of superhero movies now compared to the scenario in 2004, so they must consider the taste of audience these days.

In an interview with IGN, the director revealed that fans should watch out for plot twists in the sequel. "If you tell too much there's no fun for the audience and if you don't tell anything everyone gets mad and says "there better be a big twist!" You'll have to wait and see..!" teased, Brad Bird.

He also explained that the sequel will not be just about the superpowers, but will also focus on the characters that the audiences have come to love in the first movie.

"The powers themselves are not that interesting, it's the people that are interesting and how they react to having those powers. While I agree with Spielberg's assessment that there are way too many superhero movies right now, I'm basically sticking with the approach that I had on the movie we did, which is that it's really about the characters than it is about bursting through walls or something like that," he concluded.
