'Big Bang Theory' season 9 spoilers: Amy and Sheldon to 'consummate relationship' this season

After roughly five years of dating and a currently rocky breakup, Sheldon (Jim Parsons) and Amy (Mayim Bialik) will be consummating their relationship in the Dec. 17 episode of season 9 of "The Big Bang Theory," reports Variety.

The episode is already garnering attention as it will see the return of Bob Newhart as Arthur Jeffries aka Professor Proton but according to the report it will also mark the very first time Amy and Sheldon will finally get intimate in the bedroom and that the scene was already filmed this past Nov. 17.

"After over five years of dating, we felt the time was right for Sheldon and Amy to finally consummate their relationship, and we're so excited for the audience to see the journey over the next several episodes," explained executive producer Steve Molaro.

However, it isn't clear if the duo only commit the act as a means of resolving open issues or as a one-night stand or if they have officially reunited and are once again a couple. Throughout season 9 thus far, Amy has been shown to be dating other men and there have been attempts for Sheldon to do the same.

It is speculated by some fans that Sheldon and Amy will simply have a one-night stand as a means of forgiving each other instead of it being an act that binds them back as a couple.

As stated in a report from Cinema Blend, the mere fact that the duo will be going this far will be a big leap for Sheldon. Sheldon and Amy have been dating for several years but their very first official kiss wasn't until the season 8 episode "The Locomotive Manipulation."

Given that Professor Proton passed away in the series, it is likely his "Force ghost" may play a part in influencing Sheldon to push through with the sexual act. This may even tie in to the season 8 cliffhanger where Sheldon revealed he had plans of proposing to Amy.
