"Sherlock Holmes 3" could be in production as early as fall. Since lead actor Robert Downey Jr. is a very busy man, missing the target fall schedule might cost the potential release of the film itself.

Joel Silver, a co-producer of the "Sherlock" films, told Collider that the "Sherlock Holmes 3" filming will begin later this year.

"He's gotta launch into another Avengers movie, right after the New Year, so we're trying to get it done," he said.

"We're hoping we can get it done. If it works, great. If not, we'll do it another time. But, it looks like it could happen now," Silver stated, further exciting fans of the trilogy-capper.

This lines up with what Downey remarked last month in an interview with ShortList that he and director Guy Ritchie will do their best to begin the production of "Sherlock Holmes 3" this year.

The possibility is made more likely with actor Jude Law, who is expected to reprise his role as Sherlock's right-hand man John Watson in "Sherlock Holmes 3," available to film this fall.

Add to that the fact that Downey is extremely adamant about making "Sherlock Holmes 3" happen. "It really is a big deal to go and do those movies," the actor said during his ShortList interview.

He added that they are serious in doing the film and are not simply doing it for the sake of the "Sherlock Holmes" movie franchise getting the third installment everyone has been waiting for.

"When we're making those Sherlock movies it is off the hook. [So] we'll attempt to make one this year," the actor stated.

Downey and the rest of the cast and crew have been talking about making "Sherlock Holmes 3" ever since the second "Sherlock Holmes" film subtitled "A Game of Shadows" hit the big screen back in 2011. However, conflicts in schedule interfered and it was only this year that they all found time to finally do the project.

Plot-wise, there are rumors that the film will see the return of Rachel McAdams as Irene Adler, who was, interestingly, killed by James Moriarty (Jared Harris) in the second film.

Right now, "Sherlock Holmes 3" has no release date. The people involved haven't hinted at a target date as well.
