The "Resident Evil" films have come a long way since the first film debuted in 2002, and the series will come to an end with the upcoming "Resident Evil: The Final Chapter." Screen Gems has just launched the film's first official trailer, and director Paul W.S. Anderson has shared a few details regarding the new movie.

The trailer opens with Alice (Milla Jovovich) surviving the failed battle teased at the end of the previous film, "Resident Evil: Retribution." She is then chased down by some sort of undead flying monster. At the same time, a monologue plays where Alice explains that, for the past ten years, all she's known is fighting Umbrella and their monsters.

From that point on the trailer showcases the return of Dr. Alexander Isaacs (Iain Glen), Albert Wesker (Shawn Roberts), the Red Queen, as well as some of Alice's companions. The trailer also reveals that the majority of the film will take place back in Racoon City, where the zombie infection first began to spread.

Although the film will see a return of many familiar faces and elements, director Paul W.S. Anderson has explained that the movie will be different from all the rest. Speaking during the New York Comic-Con (via Polygon), he explains that the movie will finally explore Alice's origins.

"This is the conclusion to the series, we're bringing it full circle and all of the questions that have been hanging over it are all going to be answered by this movie," Anderson explained. "This is the movie where we discover the truth about her and the truth about the Umbrella Corporation," he went on to say.

This is also hinted in the trailer where Alice mentions she remembers nothing beyond the events of the first film. Fans will recall that in the very first movie she suffered from amnesia, and the only details she could recall was that she was a former employee of the Umbrella Corp. until she betrayed the company and attempted to steal and sell the T-Virus.

"Resident Evil: The Final Chapter" is scheduled to premiere on Jan. 27, 2017.
