Guillermo del Toro brought something fresh to the table when he introduced movie lovers to "Pacific Rim" in 2013.
It was the Director's own take on the popular Japanese "Kaiju" genre which notably features giant monsters threatening to wipe out all of humanity either by going on a rampage against civilization or by being pitted against one or more other creatures which results in massive collateral damage.
Another element that del Toro borrowed from the Japanese is the use of "Mechas" or gigantic robots, which is still one of the biggest obsessions associated with modern Japanese culture since the early 1980s.
The film focuses on humanity's ongoing war with the Kaiju using "Jaegers," gigantic, bipedal machines that can give monsters as much punishment as they can take. The only drawback is that the Jaegers' neural interface causes tremendous strain for a single pilot, and therefore requires two or more people with compatible brainwaves to successfully control.
The 2018 sequel, "Pacific Rim: Uprising" will pick up where the first movie left off. Set ten years after the semi-successful bombing of the rift — the inter-dimensional gateway where Kaiju pass through — Mako Mori (Rinko Kikuchi) must gather a new generation of Jaeger pilots to defend mankind against a new wave of monsters.
Entertainment website Screenrant reported that the new generation of Jaegers will now be much more impressive than the last. Unfortunately, the Kaiju have also levelled up their game, as they are now planning to take the fight to earth in full force.
As if the Kaiju were not already very terrifying in the first movie.
"Uprising" will feature three new monsters among others, with the "baddest" of them all being Raijin, a category 5 Kaiju that has the appearance of a T-Rex and can cover itself defensively.
The two others belong to category 4 but are still a force to be reckoned with: Hakuja, a monster with burrowing capabilities, and Strikethorn, who can shoot plasma spears.
The movie also stars John Boyega ("Star Wars: The Force Awakens," "Star Wars: The Last Jedi") who plays Mako Mori's estranged brother, whom she recruits along with other young pilots.
Fans can expect a bigger, more explosive fight when metal meets teeth on March 22, 2018.
