'Avatar 2' release date, plot news: release expected in 2018; First movie's villain rumored to return in primary role

 Twentieth Century Fox Official

Rumors about the sequel of the highly acclaimed "Avatar" movie point to actor Stephen Lang taking the lead role in the upcoming film. This is a surprising turn of events, but highly plausible given the fact that the same rumors say that Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldana) will be abducted by this film's villains.

As fans can remember, Colonel Miles Quatrich (Lang) was the most hated villain from the first "Avatar" movie. After all, he commanded his man to invade the Na'vi's Tree of Souls, but in the end he was killed by an arrow to the chest. As such, if the rumors are true, his return in the sequel will be a big surprise for fans.

Game N Guide reports that in this movie, Quaritch will again take up the role of a commander and lead a group on a mission to retrieve both Sully and Neytiri as the main protagonist. Should that happen, it would be interesting for fans to see how he interacts with the same people he fought in the first film. Of course, as of the moment director James Cameron has yet to give any confirmation, but he did mention about developing his characters in the most unexpected places, which certainly makes this rumor all the more believable.

However, as much as the hype for the film is palpable, Vine Report notes that a lot of reports and rumors point to the film's delay due to many reasons, such as Cameron wanting more time to refine and polish the script. The report even points out that Cameron ensures that this movie will not be released on 2017 since the newest "Star Wars" episode will be shown in the same year.

As such, "Avatar 2" is expected to release sometime in December 2018, with sequels possibly showing in 2020, 2022 and 2023.
