'Aquaman' plot news: Director teases new Atlantean armor but it is not the Hook Hand

"Aquaman" director James Wan wished everybody a happy new year with a sneak peek of what could be Arthur Curry's (Jason Momoa) new armor in the upcoming film.

"Happy New Year from the Deep! Here's to a great 2018," Wan wrote on Twitter.

The accompanying image features what appears to be an arm or leg piece with an intricate octopus design embossed into the metal. A hooked spearhead can also be seen in the foreground with a helmet, sparking speculations that Aquaman's hand might get cut off in the film just like in the comics.

According to reports, the underwater superhero lost his hand at the beginning of Peter David's run in the 1990s. A villain named Charybdis rendered Aquaman's ability to talk to fish useless and put his left hand in a pool full of piranhas. For many years, he wore a hook replacement until he was resurrected at the end of "Blackest Night" with both hands intact.

However, when asked by one of his followers whether the photo teases that hook hand from the comics, the director clarified with a simple "No."

Right behind "Avengers: Infinity War" and "Black Panther," Wan's "Aquaman" is one of the most-anticipated movies of the year. It has been teased as a high-seas adventure and a "big road movie." Momoa previously teased it has that "Star Wars quality of gigantic ships and guys riding sharks" and it is going be this "whole new world" fans have never seen before.

It remains to be seen how well "Aquaman" would perform critically and financially. The DC Extended Universe has been polarizing so far, but hopefully 2019 will see a big change with Wan's film.

Also starring Amber Heard as Mera, Patrick Wilson as Ocean Master, and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Black Manta, "Aquaman" dives into theaters on Dec. 21, 2018.
