Seek First His Kingdom and His Righteousness

But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.

So often in life we get so entangled in worries and problems. What will I do if I lose my job? Have I got enough money to pay all the bills? The worries we can have on a daily basis are endless. But in Matthew 6:25–34 Jesus is teaching us a very important lesson that effectively ends all our worries.

Here Jesus is teaching us that there is a priority. In life setting up the priority is very important. Without priority anxiety results after endless wandering and no firm aim in your life. The precious wisdom of life is distinguishing between what you should do now and what you should do later.

Mt 6: 25 Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is life not more important than food, and the body more important than clothes?

Here, Jesus is making a comparison. Are your clothes more important or your body? Is food more important or is your life more important? So often we get confined in worrying about the things we need and so often we lose the priority. Food and clothes are important and God knows we need them but too, but often we focus on these things as if they are the most important thing. Man is more important than any possession and yet in our lives we live the other way around, as if the possessions are the most important thing.

Verse 26 Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?

Jesus is teaching us that too often we lose ourselves because of possessions. Jesus is asking us, if that is how much God looks after the birds in the air, how much more will he look after you, His child and most precious creation? Birds do not store up their food and then go out to find more but man stores up possessions and lives in continual search of more. Because of this we cannot experience the freedom that comes from not holding onto too many possessions.

Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life?

Jesus is telling us not to worry because of our possessions, or what we do not possess. He is asking us, why worry? The ones who worry are the ones who lack faith in God.

Verse 32-33 For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.

God is the one who rules over this whole earth, he owns this whole earth and he owns us. God knows we need these things, He knows our difficulties, our sufferings, but if we seek first His Kingdom and His righteousness, the God who knows everything will take care of everything. So, don’t worry but put your absolute faith in God and he will give you all you need.
