Nearly 100 people were injured and several vehicles were damaged on Saturday when Bangladeshi students protesting over the death of a classmate in a road accident clashed with police in the capital Dhaka.

Police fired rubber bullets and teargas shells at several hundred students who had blocked a major road in the busy Tejgaon industrial area and were hurling stones and burning tyres.

"The situation is still tense and we are trying to chase away violent student groups," said a police officer at the scene.

The authorities have closed the Tejgaon Polytechnic Institute for an indefinite period and urged students to leave their dormitories by the afternoon. Most of the 5,000 students of the institute reside on the campus.

A student of the institute was killed when he was hit by a bus near the campus on Friday night. Students immediately set a bus on fire and damaged several other vehicles before police dispersed them using batons and teargas.
