Man held over 'frenzied' attack on girl

Police said on Wednesday they had arrested a 21-year-old man in connection with the frenzied knife attack on a teenage girl who was left for dead in a Lancashire park.

Jessica Knight, 14, is critical in hospital after suffering multiple stab wounds in the incident which took place at around 5 p.m. on Monday in Astley Park, Chorley, south of Preston.

Lancashire Police said they were now questioning a local 21-year-old man on suspicion of attempted murder. Detectives also released CCTV footage of Knight taken just five minutes before she was attacked, in a bid to jog people's memory.

"I would urge anyone who thinks they may have seen her in that time to contact us," said Detective Superintendent Steve Brunskill.

"If you were in the area at that time it may also be possible that you could have seen the person responsible for this nasty attack, and we would really like to speak to you."

Knight was thought to have gone to the park, a popular hangout for young people, after visiting shops in Astley village.

She was found by a passer-by who alerted the emergency services.
