Labour MP dies after shooting in Leeds

Labour MP Jo Cox died on Thursday afternoon after she was shot and stabbed in her constituency.

A 52 year old man was arrested in connection with the attack, West Yorksire Police have confirmed. The police have said they are not looking for anyone else.

The MP and Batley and Spen and mother of two was left bleeding on the street after the unprovoked attack. She was rushed immediately to hospital where it was said her condition was "critical". However the police later confirmed she had died as a result of her injuries.

Shocked tributes to the 41 year old MP flooded in as news of the worst attack on an MP in decades spread.

Andy Flannagan, chair of Christians on the Left told Christian Today he was "shocked and stunned" by her death.

"On behalf of Christians on the Left we are truly sad and will be praying for her family."

Flannagan went on to say it was "especially cruel that a public servant had died in the midst of doing the thing that nobody thanks them for doing – the invisible service in their constituency that people don't appreciate happens".

A number of politicians also offered their condolences.

The Archbishop of Canterbury tweeted his horror after the shooting, before the news of her death had been confirmed.
