'Fair trade fashion' will hit Wales next month when models display the latest lines in ethically manufactured clothing.

Hosted by Wales' premier fair trade shop Fair Do's, the event marks another historic evening of Welsh action against global poverty and celebrates the fact that Cardiff is the first fair trade capital in the world.

The event takes place at The Gate Arts Centre in Cardiff on Saturday 5 May.

Jan Tucker, executive director of Fair Do's said: "We hope to have a very special guest at the fashion show who can explain how fair trade is making a difference in the poorest communities in Africa."

The Global Journey, the worldwide tour of the Fair Trade Organisation Mark banner, will be displayed during the event, while the international statement about fair trade will be read out.

The Global Journey started its campaign in Mumbai, India, in 2004 and Wales will be one of the last countries it visits on its tour.

Tucker explained: "Of course, the fashion show itself promises to be an opportunity to buy clothes that you know have been produced to a high standard, without compromising on human rights."

Consumers in the UK are now buying £300m worth of fair trade goods a year, campaigners revealed in February.

In January, Welcome Baptist Church in East Sussex became the nation's 400th 'Fairtrade Church'. The scheme, supported by aid agency Tearfund, encourages churches throughout the country to serve only Fairtrade products at all church events.
