Does my job matter to God?

While some of us think that our jobs are merely ways for us to earn and are not that important to God, did you know that your job matters to Him?

In the first chapter of Genesis we find that God worked in creating all things from the first to the sixth day, resting only on the seventh. Because of this, we know that God is a God who works, and that work is not a bad thing at all.

We also read in Genesis 2 that God created Adam with His own hands, and gave life to Him with His own breath. Then after creating Adam, God placed him in the garden and gave him a task: to name all the animals. It was God who gave Adam the first job ever. God wanted him to have something to do, and He wants us to do something for Him, too.

God has designed us for good works

Did you know that God has designed you to do good things? Paul wrote in Ephesians 2:10 that "we are God's handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do." God has designed you for a very important task, and with this verse also tells us that we have been specifically blessed with the skills and competence needed to succeed in the task that He has given us!

This means that you can do well in your job. You can excel and do more than you could possibly think.

Jesus wants us to shine

Not only did God prepare us to do good works, He also wants us to give our best for His glory. Jesus said in Matthew 5:15-16, "[n]either do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven."

He wants us to excel in our jobs so that by our excellence, good character, perseverance and integrity, people will have a reason to thank the Lord.

God wants to provide for you through your job

Moses told the Israelites in Deuteronomy 8:18 to "remember the Lord your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth." God wants to provide for our needs, and has given us the strength we need to work and receive our income through our jobs.

Not only do we inspire people to thank God through working well, we also help ourselves when we work well.

Jesus wants us to spread His good news in our workplace

Did you know that you are Christ's ambassador in your workplace? You were put in your company or organisation for a higher purpose, and that is to bring the gospel to your co-workers. Jesus said "Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit" (Matt. 28:19).

Your job matters to God. That's because you matter to Him.
