Christians asked to oppose abortion adverts

Christian Concern For Our Nation and the Christian Institute are asking Christians to oppose proposals to allow abortion adverts on TV and radio.

The Advertising Standards Authority has put forward proposals to allow abortion services to advertise on TV and radio, and adverts for condoms to air before the 9pm watershed.

The proposals are being considered in a public consultation by the Broadcasting Committee of Advertising Practice that closes at 5pm on Friday.

CCFON and the Christian Institute are inviting Christians to add their names to a petition launched by the ProLife Alliance urging the Prime Minister to reject the proposals.

The petition states that abortion “is not a consumer product” but a procedure that remains illegal under the terms of the Abortion Act.

“Abortion is not a legitimate subject for a TV or radio advertisement,” it states. “In addition, abortion has serious implications for women’s health and the psychological and physical impact of abortion should not be trivialised by advertisements.

“Given the widespread opposition to abortion, and the fact that pro-abortion organisations do not offer positive support to help women continue with their pregnancies, they should not be able to advertise on either radio or TV.”

CCFON and the Christian Institute are also asking Christians to put in a response to the BCAP consultation and sign a separate petition to the Prime Minister asking him to stop abortion advertising on TV.

“Please pray, life is a precious gift from God,” said Andrea Minichiello Williams, director of CCFON.

Colin Hart, director of the Christian Institute, said: “Abortion is a highly controversial issue and television is not an appropriate medium for advertising such things. Please pray about this consultation and for a turning of the tide against abortion.”
