BRUSSELS - The European Commission said on Monday it planned to give Britain 162.4 million euros (116.9 million pounds) in aid for regions of England, Northern Ireland and Wales that were damaged by floods in June and July.

The money, from the European Union Solidarity Fund, will help cover the cost of rescue services, clean-ups after flood damage and the restoration of basic infrastructure, the EU executive said in a statement.

Unusually heavy rainfall in June and July caused disastrous floods in several parts of Britain, severely damaging infrastructure, businesses and private homes. The cost of clean-up and repair work was estimated at over 4.6 billion euros.
