Believe it or not: Some people maim selves just to get disabled tag

As bizarre as it may sound, there are now people going as far as maiming themselves so that they could be considered by society as disabled people "trapped in a healthy person's body," according to a news report.

"As the public begins to embrace people who identify as transgender, the trans people within the disability movement are also seeking their due, or at the very least a bit of understanding in a public that cannot fathom why anyone would want to be anything other than healthy and mobile," the Canadian newspaper National Post wrote.

"We define transability as the desire or the need for a person identified as able-bodied by other people to transform his or her body to obtain a physical impairment," said Alexandre Baril, who presented a study on the matter at the University of Ottawa. "The person could want to become deaf, blind, amputee, paraplegic. It's a really, really strong desire."

Clive Baldwin, a researcher who also teaches social work at St. Thomas University in Canada, has interviewed 37 transabled people, most of whom are men, from Germany, Switzerland, and Canada. Most desire to be amputated or paralysed. One wants his penis removed, and another wants to be blind.

A man called "One-Hand Jason" cut his right arm off on purpose because he believes he should be disabled. He even researched how he can remove his limb without bleeding to death.

"My goal was to get the job done with no hope of reconstruction or re-attachment, and I wanted some method that I could actually bring myself to do," he said.

There are no estimates yet on how many people globally are transabled.

Some transabled are not successful in injuring themselves permanently, while others fake their disability by riding a wheelchair or wearing braces.

These "transabled" people wish to be given the same level of acceptance as those who wish to transition from one gender to another. But just as a debate still rages on whether or not insurance or even government assistance should be given to the transgender community, "the next debate in the wings is whether taxpayers should be stuck footing the bill for people who want perfectly good arms, legs, eyes, or ears destroyed surgically to satisfy their 'transabled' feelings," Breitbart wrote.

"Further, where does that leave government assistance to the legitimately disabled? Should someone who purposefully had their working leg(s) removed to satisfy their 'transabled' mania be allowed to use handicapped parking? Should they get government assistance generally offered only for those disabled at birth or by health problems or accidents? Should they get special treatment in stores or public venues like disabled people often do?"

Breitbart noted that the transabled persons have the condition called Body Integrity Identity Disorder but want the society to accept it as a norm, just like transgenderism.

"The mental condition that causes the desire to maim oneself is dimly understood and only recently studied. The condition is being called Body Integrity Identity Disorder and is a condition that 'transabled' people want to see legitimised as a serious condition that should be fully normalised just as transgenderism is today, not treated as a mental disorder."

Marsha West of Berean Research voiced a similar opinion, emphasising that society has become "moral relativistic."

"What's really at issue here is that it's no longer deemed appropriate to view people as having psychological disorders—and the fact of the matter is that trans-people do have a psychological disorder," she wrote.

"Because the Left is bent on making the most perverted and bizarre human behaviors 'normal,' pretty much anything goes in our moral relativistic society."
