Windows 10 release date: OS for mobile phones not coming this summer

It seems that mobile users would need to wait to see the Windows 10 for phones in action.

Speaking at the annual Microsoft Build conference in San Francisco, the company's corporate vice president, Joe Belfiore, said that the PC release of the new operating system will go on as scheduled for its summer release, and will be continuously upgraded via Windows Update and a number of app improvements.

At the conference, tech site The Verge also reported that Belfiore confirmed to the assembly that the new Windows 10 would come in staggered releases. In this schedule, the PC version will be the first to be officially launched in the summer, followed by the operating system for other platforms.

Microsoft is focusing on the release of the new Windows 10 for PC first, as this version serves the bigger audience. Tablets and hybrid devices would also make the cut for the summer release of the new operating system.

Meanwhile, it would still take months for Windows phone users before they can update to the latest mobile OS from Microsoft. Belfiore said, "From the device view, our main focus is to kick off the Windows 10 launch wave with a great launch on the PC. You should expect that the other devices — phone, HoloLens, Xbox, Surface Hub — will be staggered, probably not on the same date as the PC."

Specifically, Belfiore pointed out that the phone version of Windows 10 is still far along the horizon. "Our phone builds have not been as far along as our PC builds," explained Belfiore. "We're adapting the phone experiences later than we're adding the PC experiences."

Many fans are eagerly waiting for the release of Windows 10, as recent reports of its Technical Preview glowingly ascribed Microsoft's 'back to the basics' approach, making Windows 10 much more user-friendly and universal with a host of new apps.
