"Wayward Pines" season 2 ended with the humans going back into their cryostasis pods. Since then, author Blake Crouch, who wrote the novel the series is based on, has shared some new details about where this ending takes the series in season 3.

According to Master Herald, Crouch stated that season 3 is going to focus on the final hours of humanity as they continue their battle against the Abbies.

The Abbies were hinted to evolve further in season 2, and Margaret (Rochelle Okoye) was shown to have a high level of intelligence. In season 3 they may have evolved to the point of being smarter and physically stronger than humans.

Crouch also reportedly stated that the ending of season 2 was intentionally designed to show the humans losing as it would build up to the climactic confrontation between humans and Abbies in season 3. With only a few humans left, the battle would determine which race would continue on as the true successors of the human race

Back in April, series co-creator and producer M. Night Shyamalan also confirmed that if season 3 would move forward, it would be the final installment of the show. Shyamalan explained that "Wayward Pines" is designed as a three-season story, and the next season would conclude the main plot.

However, Fox has yet to officially renew the show. In August, during the Television Critics Association panel, Fox CEO Dana Walden explained (via TV Line) that the final rating count is yet to be released, and she acknowledged that season 2 struggled in the beginning, compared to season 1.

Despite this fact, she did point out that the series is the leading scripted show in the past summer, indicating that there is a high probability of it getting renewed for one final season. Should the series move forward, season 3 is expected to premiere in summer 2017.
