Rookie quarterback Jameis Winston is in great shape as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are set to open their training camp Saturday with the 2015 season opening in just over a month.
"I'm 236 [pounds] right now. And I know in this Tampa heat during training camp, I'm going to lose a little bit more. I'm back at a good weight. I'm just looking forward to going out there and balling out," Winston said Tuesday according to ESPN.
The 2015 no. 1 pick's weight has been a hot topic before the draft and a photo of him looking like he was out of shape while working out on the field surfaced last February; but his trainer told The Big Lead that Winston was wearing a leash around his waist at the time and that is why he looked overweight, CBS Sports reported.
But that is no longer an issue as the 21-year-old quarterback seems to be in good shape and a huge part of that is his offseason workout on the field with a number of his teammates.
ESPN reported that wide receivers Vincent Jackson and Louis Murphy worked with Winston in Tallahassee; and the rookie quarterback was also seen working out with tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins and wide receiver Russell Shepard in Tampa.
"There never truly is an offseason. These guys have been working their tails off trying to get better and trying to get into football shape. We're ready to get football back in action," Winston stated in the report.
Winston and his fellow rookies reported to the Buccaneers training camp Monday and will go through a number of meetings before their other teammates report Friday.
According to Winston, Buccaneers head coach Lovie Smith spoke about the Super Bowl when he met with the rookies.
"That's the dream, man. It gives me butterflies. That's everyone's dream, the Super Bowl," Winston stated.
Tampa Bay being associated to the Super Bowl as of now seems far-fetched after a bad outing last season that saw them finish with a 2-14 record, missing the NFL playoffs for the seventh consecutive season.
But the arrival of Winston sparked hope as he is expected to be the face of the franchise for years to come.
