'Star Trek Beyond' spoilers: Simon Pegg on the new space station

The second trailer for "Star Trek Beyond" has garnered a significant amount of praise, particularly after the poorly received first trailer. One of the new features showcased in the promo is a large space station called Starbase Yorktown where the USS Enterprise is shown docking. Speaking to IGN, writer-actor Simon Pegg gave more details regarding the station and its purpose.

According to Pegg, the space station was located at the very edge of the Federation's territory in space. Beyond the station was uncharted territory and space owned by other groups such as the Klingons, Romulans and other unknown species. It was also a hub world where people from all different races and planets can peacefully meet and interact.

"It's a kind of diplomatic hub. It's where all the most recent Federation inductees can come and mingle with each other and learn about each other," Pegg explained. "It's basically a place where they can go, where they can better understand what being part of the Federation means."

In a jokingly mannered Pegg stated that he and co-writer Doug Jung imagined it as a place where aliens and humans could hand out leaflets to newcomers, sharing information about the Federation and what benefits there are of joining the alliance of races. 

Pegg also stated that it was like the polar opposite of Mos Eisley, the space port in "Star Wars." As depicted in "Star Wars" Mos Eisley was filled with criminals and was home to a lot of villainous plans. Starbase Yorktown, on the other hand, is a diplomatic and peaceful hub station.

It is also revealed that the film will begin with the USS Enterprise docking into the station after 10 months of almost no interaction with other people. It is confirmed that the film takes place in the middle of the USS Enterprise's five-year mission to explore deep space and this will be the first time in a long time that the crew gets some rest right before the movie's main villain attacks. 

"Star Trek Beyond" opens in July 22.
