Itwas reported last week by The Wrap that Sony and Marvel were down to just five young actors to play the role of Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which would include a cameo in "Captain America: Civil War" and a solo film in 2017. A new report hints that Asa Butterfield is leading those five picks.
The Latino Review cites that it had reached several industry sources to confirm that Asa Butterfield was indeed the current front runner and one source allegedly claims that "Marvel liked him since day one."
Asa Butterfield is most notably recognized for his role in the Academy Award-winning film "Hugo" as well as the science fiction war film "Ender's Game," which also starred veteran science fiction actor Harrison Ford. Butterfield is currently filming "Miss Peregrines Home for Peculiar Children," directed by Tim Burton.
Butterfield, now 18, is significantly younger than Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire when they first took on the role of Spider-Man at 28 and 26 respectively. This would fit Marvel's need for a young actor that could portray Spider-Man in high school for several films.
"We want to play with Spider-Man in the high school years," Feige stated, as cited by Collider. "There are so many things from the comics that haven't been done yet. The most obvious being the 'young, doesn't quite fit in' kid before his powers, and then the fella that puts on a mask and swings around and fights bad guys and doesn't shut up, which is something we want to play with and we're excited about."
The other actors that are reportedly up for the role are Nat Wolff, Tom Holland, Timothee Chalamet, and Liam James. Fans have speculated that Nat Wolff would grab the role after his notable performance in "The Fault in Our Stars" and his upcoming film "Paper Towns."
