The San Francisco 49ers will play the Minnesota Vikings on NFL Monday Night Football in Week 1 of the NFL 2015 regular season. This will be one of two games on Monday night to kick start the new season off, and it should be an exciting game between two teams desperate to start the new season off with a win. The 49ers will be hoping to claim a win today to keep up with the St Louis Rams and Arizona Cardinals, who both won their opening games at the weekend. Surprisingly in the NFC West, the Seattle Seahawks lost their opener, and if the 49ers can win today then the Seahawks will be the only team in the division to have lost a game in Week 1. San Francisco for sure would love nothing better than to get their noses out in front in Week 1.
The Vikings meanwhile, will have seen how the Green Bay Packers stormed to victory in their opening game in Week 1, and that means if the Vikings have any hope of competing with them this season they will want to pull up alongside them at 1-0 tonight.
One of the main storylines in the build up to today's game is the comeback of Adrian Peterson. He missed most of last season due to off the field problems, and his running power was clearly missed by Minnesota. His comeback, Vikings' fans will hope, will herald a return to their power running game of a few seasons back when Peterson demolished defenses as he posted a record breaking season.
Last season the Vikings ranked just number 14 in the league in rushing, posting just 112.8 yards per game on the ground. Peterson will be hoping to beat that number by himself each game this season, and he will be hoping to send a message to the NFL today that he is back in town.
In his last big campaign Peterson went 1,266 yards on 279 carries for 10 touchdowns, and the season before that he surpassed 2,000 yards, scoring 12 touchdowns in the process. In comparison, last season Minnesota's leading rusher was Matt Asiata, who went for only 570 yards, with an average carry of just 3.5 yards. It's fair to say that Peterson was sorely missed by Minnesota last year.
Whether he will be back to his best for the Vikings against the 49ers tonight remains to be seen.
