After not being re-signed by the Washington Wizards following last season, veteran shooter Rasual Butler was given another chance; but this time, he will have to compete for a roster spot after being signed by the San Antonio Spurs.
In a report by the San Antonio Express-News, the biggest weapon in Butler's arsenal that can help him in his goal of making it to the team is his shooting.
Butler has been known for his shooting in 12 seasons played in the National Basketball Association (NBA) and is a 36.3 percent three-point shooter in his career.
Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich said he did not promise Butler a guaranteed roster spot but added that the veteran is aware of the role he can have with the team.
"He obviously can shoot the basketball. If he couldn't shoot, we wouldn't be talking to him. You got to have a skill to play. For all those reasons, he's somebody that's got a great shot to make our team," Popovich said, according to the San Antonio Express-News.
In the report, Butler also cited his shooting saying, "What was able to get me in the door was my ability to shoot the ball."
The New Orleans Pelicans were also reportedly interested in bringing back Butler to the franchise, but he decided to join the Spurs, which for him was the "right decision" because he wanted to be part of a "positive" and "winning" environment.
Now, with San Antonio, Butler will not be changing his game and knows what he should do as a renowned shooter.
Because the Spurs have a lot of offensive weapons, the former La Salle Explorer is expecting to do more shots if he makes the roster.
Along with Butler, guard Jimmer Fredette and forwards Reggie Williams and DeShaun Thomas are also competing for a roster spot, according to the report.
Last season, Butler was with the Washington Wizards playing in 75 regular season games, averaging 7.7 points and 2.6 rebounds per contest.
