Roger Federer is looking to get back on top at Wimbledon this year, and in the quarter finals he has a tough opponent in France's Gilles Simon.
Federer, 33, is looking for his eighth Wimbledon singles title, which will break his three-way tie with Pete Sampras and Willie Renshaw for the most championships won in the tournament. He easily made it to the quarter finals after defeating Roberto Bautista Agut at Centre Court in the fourth round Monday, 6-2 6-2 6-3.
"I don't think I made a statement. I did a nice job making the transition. It was a good match. I got off to a good start and kept rolling. Obviously, maybe Roberto wasn't at his very best," Federer said of the match, according to BBC Sports.
Federer took the first set in just 19 minutes and was again in control in the second before Agut called for the trainer after hurting his ankle while sliding beyond the baseline, BBC Sports reported.
Federer again dominated the third set to end the match in just one hour and 26 minutes. The victory brings him closer to a possible semifinals clash against Andy Murray, who will play Vasek Pospisil in the quarterfinals.
Simon, Federer's opponent in the quarterfinals, qualified by defeating Czech Republic's Tomas Berdych 6-3 6-3 6-2. Simon and Federer have faced each other seven times, and the French national lost five of those matches.
Federer expressed his happiness at reaching the quarterfinals but said he could not relax as he would be facing Simon, who had already tested him in the past.
"I'm happy to be back in the quarters here. This is really when it gets much more interesting, when you can look ahead a little bit," Federer told the Daily Mail.
"But I'm not going to look further than Gilles Simon, who has caused me difficulties in the past. He is one of the best counter punchers in the game. That's my really focus right now," he added.
