'Resident Evil 2' remake release date: Game rumored to hit shelves by 2018

Resident Evil 2 Capcom

"Resident Evil 2 Remake" is officially in development, but Capcom has yet to announce an official release date for the game. However, according to a report from Cartermatt, it is possible that the game may be teased during early 2017 when "Resident Evil 7" releases, hinting the remake could launch by late 2017 or even early 2018.

According to the report, the remake is going to take some cues from the canceled "Resident Evil 2 Reborn," the fan-made HD remake of the original "Resident Evil 2." Capcom shut the project down back in 2015 but did speak with the developers and confirmed that they would be working together on the official remake Capcom was making.

Given that the fan-made version never got released, it is difficult to determine what elements are being taken and which are not. However, it is expected that the game will be built from the ground up instead of merely adding high-resolution textures. This means it will be more of a re-imagining of the original game.

In many ways, this will make it similar to the remake of the first "Resident Evil" game which was first launched on the GameCube and most recently on newer consoles and PC as it saw many new areas, brand new voice work, new gameplay mechanics and full 3D environments.

Capcom, in an interview with Bloody Disgusting, explained that the "Resident Evil 2 Remake" would follow the same philosphy as merely updating the graphics would not be enough.

"As someone who worked on the original 'Resident Evil,' I have great memories of it," explained producer Yasuhiro Anpo. "The GameCube remake is so amazing, I want to use those memories to try to catch up to and even supersede it with a new, modernized version of 'Resident Evil 2."

As fans await for Capcom to announce the official release date for "Resident Evil 2 Remake," "Resident Evil 7: Biohazard" is due to launch on Jan. 24, 2017.
