The search for a team is over for veteran quarterback Michael Vick who was signed by the Pittsburgh Steelers to a one-year contract to be a backup for starter Ben Roethlisberger.
Pittsburgh announced the signing of Vick Tuesday with National Football League (NFL) Media Insider Ian Rapoport reporting that the pact is worth the league minimum.
The Steelers signed Vick after losing backup quarterback Bruce Gradkowski who sustained a dislocated finger against the Green Bay Packers and will be out for a few weeks as he will have surgery.
Gradkowski was placed on the injured reserve list along with the signing of Vick.
Vick was in search for a team early in the offseason after the New York Jets decided not to keep him for another year.
The 35-year-old quarterback spent last season with New York after five seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles. It was during his time with the Eagles when he tried to make a return after getting out of prison and had some success.
In the 2014 season, Vick played in 10 games for the Jets which included three starts. During the season, he completed 64 of 121 passes for 604 yards with three touchdowns.
Vick and Roethlisberger add rich experience at the quarterback position for Pittsburgh since both already played more than 10 seasons in the NFL.
In a report by ESPN, Roethlisberger said before the signing that he is in favor of Vick joining the Steelers as long as it benefits the team despite his past.
Vick was imprisoned before his stint with the Eagles because of funding a dogfighting operation while Roethlisberger has a foundation that helps K-9 units of police and fire departments, ESPN added.
The Steelers made it to the playoffs in the 2014 season after missing it in the 2012 and 2013 seasons.
They finished the regular season with an 11–5 record to play in the Wild Card Playoffs where they faced the Baltimore Ravens who defeated them 30–17.
