'Person of Interest' season 5 episode 9 spoilers: a villain from the past returns

 CBS

An old villain returns as Reese (Jim Caviezel) and Fusco (Kevin Chapman) fall into a trap. As shown in the offiical promo trailer, "The Voice" returns and traps both Reese and Fusco in their own precinct, where they are surrounded by armed gang members and the newest person of interest.

The trailer showcases the officers backed into a corner where they may attempt to make a last stand and fire back at the criminals trying to gun them down. Finch (Michael Emerson) is shown unharmed, outside the precinct, but he does mention that very bad things are about to unfold.

According to the synopsis, as per Ecumenical News, Root (Amy Acker) is going to get the surprise of her life when she discovers a shocking revelation. It is heavily hinted that this will be the episode where Shaw (Sarah Shahi) returns, and this will get the whole team alarmed given that she was last seen taken hostage by the Samaritan.

Shaw's escape was teased in the previous episode, and there are speculations that she may not make it due to the effects of the simulations and tests that were done to her. Shaw managed to prove her love for Root when she repeatedly chose to shoot herself in the simulations instead of aiming the gun at Root.

Producers Greg Plageman and Jonathan Nolan previously stated in a report from IGN that they wanted Shaw's return to make a big impact, not only in the episode she makes a return in but for the subsequent episodes given that season 5 is the final season for the show.

"We felt like, when she came back, we wanted to deal with the Root relationship in an honest emotional way," Plageman explained. "We didn't want to dance around it anymore like we did for a while. After everything they'd both been through, they'd earned a big moment."

"Person of Interest" season 5, episode 9, "Sotto Voce," airs May 30.
