After delays, OnePlus fans can now download and install the OxygenOS.

OnePlus officially launched its own custom version of Android's 5.0.2 version of Lollipop after numerous teasers and delays. Since last year, the China-based manufacturer of the OnePlus One phones was teasing fans about the development of its own cooked ROM. The development was solidly confirmed in January, when OnePlus broke away from its OS partner Cyanogen. Cyanogen was the former developer of the OnePlus unit's modded operating system.

In developing its own custom version of the Android Lollipop operating system, the team at OnePlus said, "Developing OxygenOS has been an incredibly fun and challenging experience for all of us. In this environment where everyone is fighting to standout with custom ROMs, we think it's important to go back to basics. We place things like performance and battery life over gimmicks and bloated features."

Aside from ramping up the performance and battery life through minimizing bloatware and hidden programs, the new OxygenOS also incorporated OnePlus features from the old operating system such as the customized music controls, double tap wake options, and shortcuts for the camera and flashlight. Also, there is the new quick settings feature for the OS, where users can quickly organize tiles, removing or adding shortcuts just at the touch of a button. The customization options were also expanded, adding new features like switching between hardware and software navigation keys, and custom screenlock wallpapers.

OnePlus also says that the current build for its OxygenOS is just the start, and they will start building updates based on users' input.

"By creating our own operating system, we can quickly respond to user feedback and make it easier for you to continue playing a fundamental role in the future of OnePlus," the company promises in a blog post. "Our goal for OxygenOS is to provide faster, more meaningful updates and a better-integrated range of services for every OnePlus user."
