The New York Yankees might have to continue their campaign without starting pitcher CC Sabathia who was placed on the 15-day disabled list (DL) because of a right knee inflammation, which could sideline him for the remainder of the season.

Sabathia was unable to finish his last start Saturday against the Cleveland Indians and left in the third inning.

The Yankees placed Sabathia on the DL before their series opener victory against the Houston Texans last Monday.

Sabathia's right knee already went through surgery back in July 2014 and according to MLB.com, the knee was already drained twice this season and needed a cortisone injection last week.

The report added that Sabathia was to consult with a specialist in New York today, Tuesday.

Yankees manager Joe Girardi does not seem so optimistic regarding Sabathia's injury saying that there is a possibility he will not continue playing this season.

"If I can't push myself to a certain limit, then I'm not helping anybody. I'm not helping myself, not helping the organization, the team. I want to get to a level where I'm comfortable to pitch at -- sometime this year," Sabathia said, according to MLB.com.

Sabathia has struggled in the past few years and this season is no different as he is 4–9 with a 5.27 earned run average (ERA) in 24 starts.

In his 14-year career, the six-time All-Star holds an overall record of 212–128 with a 3.70 ERA.

MLB.com also cited that the 35-year-old pitcher has not posted a winning record and an ERA lower than 4.00 since 2012 when he went 15–6 with a 3.38 ERA.

Now the Yankees are left with a pitching rotation that includes Nathan Eovaldi, Ivan Nova, Michael Pineda, Luis Severino, and Masahiro Tanaka.

Despite the injury, Sabathia aims to be with the club and even go on the road to "see what happens."

The Yankees are currently at 69–55 and are tied for the top spot in the American League East with the Toronto Blue Jays.
