The Patriots come into today's game feeling good after defeating the Indianapolis Colts in a rematch of the Deflategate game. That victory put them on 5-0, but now they come up against a team that has surprised everyone this season.
The New York Jets are just a game back from the Patriots on 4-1, and first place in the AFC East is on the line in today's massive match up.
New England are having their first 5-0 season since way back in 2007 when of course they put on a spectacular 16-0 regular season. The Patriots have their powerful offense to thank for where they are. The Jets meanwhile have built their 4-1 record this year on a defense that has stifled opposition offenses. This has led to them having their own best start to a season since 2010, when they also put on 4-1 and made the Playoffs.
However, the Jets will have to be at their absolute best today to bring a halt to the Tom Brady-led Patriots' juggernaut. Last week Brady threw for 312 yards and three touchdowns as they took down the Colts.
Also the Patriots are enjoying an excellent recent record against the Jets, winning seven of their last eight match ups against one another. Brady himself is an impressive 21-7 in the series.
Earlier this week on Thursday Night Football, the Seattle Seahawks destroyed the San Francisco 49ers 20-3 as they shut down the 49ers' offense to great affect.
San Francisco were not even able to get onto the scoreboard until the second half, and when they did it would be a solitary field goal effort in the third quarter.
That result gave the Seahawks their fourth straight win over the 49ers, and it will have pleased them to dump San Francisco down to the depths of 2-5, effectively ending any lingering thoughts that the 49ers had of being able to make the Playoffs.
The Seahawks have been gaining a reputation for having fourth quarter collapses this season, and that has undermined their efforts for their division race. But there was to be no repeat of those collapses on Thursday, as they gained their first road win in four attempts to go 3-4 and within touching distance of a more mediocre .500 record.
On Thursday Night Football, quarterback Russell Wilson completed 10 of his first 12 passes to impose himself on the game, and finished the game with 235 yards passing. However, he was also alarmingly sacked five times as his team failed to give him adequate protection.
Marshawn Lynch scored a spectacular touchdown, jumping the pile for a one yard score, and overall ran for 122 yards, although the most memorable moment for many about Lynch's performance on Thursday may have been when he vomited on the sidelines in the first half.
