Motorola was the very first tech company that embraced the new Android 5.0 Lollipop as soon as it rolled out. The company was able to update most of its current generation smartphones immediately, starting with the Verizon Moto X 2014 in November last year. However, most of the issues in terms of mobile operating system upgrades have been with the carriers themselves. For example, Verizon has been taking a long time to approve a software upgrade for its carrier-exclusive DROID Turbo.
DROID Turbo users who are still stuck on Android 4.4.4 KitKat can now rejoice. The Verizon-exclusive smartphone will be having its much needed update, and with it, a surprise — the DROID Turbo will be updating directly to the newest Android 5.1.x build.
In a Google+ post by Motorola engineer Luciano Carvalho, he stated that the Verizon DROID Turbo will be skipping Android 5.0 Lollipop in favor of the 5.1 update. When asked if the company is skipping the first Android build to avoid the bugs plaguing Android 5.0 Lollipop, Motorola said that they want to take advantage of the new update's VoLTE support, an option that is one of the cornerstones of Verizon's service. This support allows crystal-clear calls on HD voice-enabled smartphones, of which the Motorola DROID Turbo is one.
The native VoLTE support on Android Lollipop's 5.1 update will control the bugs related to LTE service, which in turn will limit Verizon's and Motorola's resource spending on adapting to the issues and fixing DROID Turbo's problems.
No definite date has yet been set for when DROID Turbo users on Verizon will have their 5.1 Android Lollipop updates, but Motorola assures owners that as soon as bugs and kinks are fixed and a stable update is built, the new Android Lollipop will be rolled out to their Motorola DROID Turbo smartphones.
