New York City FC midfielder Frank Lampard, who is yet to play a single game in Major League Soccer (MLS) because of a calf strain, will also not be participating in the All-Star game against the Tottenham Hotspur.

The All-Star exhibition will be played Wednesday at Dick's Sporting Goods Park, Commerce City, Colorado.

Lampard was set to debut for NYCFC this month but the calf injury he suffered while training with the club prevented him from doing so.

The 37-year-old player was included in the MLS All-Star team after league commissioner Don Garber used one of his two commissioner's picks on him, with the other used on former Liverpool captain and now Los Angeles Galaxy midfielder Steven Gerrard.

Garber was criticised since the two had not played an official MLS game yet, with Gerrard only playing in a friendly, when he made his decision to include them in the All-Star roster.

Lampard and Gerrard are no doubt legends of the sport but a lot of people believed there were more deserving MLS players to participate in the All-Star Game than them.

But that is no longer an issue since Lampard will not be playing and will be replaced by New York Red Bulls midfielder Dax McCarty who was selected by Garber.

McCarty is a 10-year MLS veteran who joined the Red Bulls in 2011 and will be playing in his first MLS All-Star Game.

But Gerrard will remain with the All-Star squad although he already played in two MLS games for the Galaxy.

In his first MLS game, Gerrard scored one goal in the Galaxy's huge 5-2 win over the San Jose Earthquakes. Unfortunately, they lost in their next game as they fell 3-0 against the Houston Dynamo last Saturday.
