Microsoft Surface Pro 5 release date delayed until spring 2017 for Redstone 2 and Kaby Lake?

The Microsoft Surface Pro 5 has been speculated to launch by this October given that the Surface Pro 4 launched in October 2015. However, according to a report by PC Advisor, it is now possible that the Surface Pro 5 has been pushed back as far as March or April 2017 due to developers waiting for better technology.

The report points out that it is possible the Surface Pro 5 is being delayed as Microsoft waits for the next Windows 10 update, called Redstone 2. This is not going to launch until early 2017 but if the Surface Pro 5 comes with it built-in then it will have an array of new features and updated capabilities compared to the Surface Pro 4.

However, the new Windows 10 update is not the only needed piece for the Surface Pro 5. The report continues to point out that Microsoft is also likely waiting for the release of the Intel Kaby Lake processors, which promise faster and more efficient data processing while requiring less hardware to achieve these results.

There are no official release dates for either of the two required updates but both the Kaby Lake processor and the Redstone 2 update are scheduled for early 2017. This means that the Surface Pro 5, if it is indeed waiting for these before entering mass production and release, will also release around the same time.

PC Advisor has also pointed out that a leaked image from one of the main buildings at the Microsoft compound has revealed that Microsoft might be releasing multiple versions of the Surface Pro 5 and that the earliest version will launch this year while the others launch in 2017.

If this proves true then at least one variant may indeed come out this October while the more powerful versions will be coming out in Spring 2017.
