Microsoft Surface Pro 4 release date and specs rumors: Details so far

Microsoft Surface Pro 3 Microsoft Store

There are so many rumors circulating about the upcoming Surface Pro 4 that observers and Microsoft fans can no longer tell if there is a basis for them or if they're just mere hearsay and wishful thinking. Here are some of them:

Launch date

It is rumoured that the Surface Pro 4 is going to be launched later in the year, after the new Windows 10 platform is unveiled.

This seems to have a grain of truth, so unless there are delays in this year's unveiling of the Windows 10 OS, the launch for the Surface Pro 4 carrying the new operating system slated this fall might not be too far off the mark.

Two versions

There are reports that the Surface Pro 4 will come in two versions, a 12-inch one, much like its predecessor, and a "mini" 8-inch model.

This seems to come across as a wish list item rather than the truth. If Microsoft would indeed deliver two versions of the device, it is unlikely to be smaller than 12 inches, as the company touts the Surface Pro series as a hybrid tablet and laptop for mid-range computing. A small keyboard would seem out of place for businessmen and office workers, two of the targeted markets for the Surface Pro.

New processor

Will the new Surface Pro 4 offer Intel's Skylake processor?

Rumors are circulating that Intel will release a new processor in the third quarter of this year, and the new Pro 4 will introduce Skylake to the global community, being the first device to use the newest chipset. However, the timeframe would be tight, and if the Pro 4 would indeed use a new processor, it will come in limited quantities, or else Microsoft will wait for Intel's full production and will release the Pro 4 next year.
