Miami Marlins star Giancarlo Stanton will not be gracing the field again this Major League Baseball (MLB) season as the club decided to rule him out for the remainder of the year due to the wrist injury he suffered last June.

The injury was expected to keep Stanton out for four to six weeks. However, he was having a slow recovery from surgery, although the Marlins kept the possibilities open for a return within the season.

But with the Marlins again out of playoff contention with a 69–89 record, they have decided to rest Stanton for the remaining games of the season.

"It will be a good offseason, he'll be back ready. There's no thought of, that hey perhaps he won't be ready or any of that. It's just going to take a little longer than was originally thought," Marlins manager Dan Jennings said last Tuesday, according to the Associated Press.

"He gave his best effort trying to get back. He wanted to be out playing. He just didn't have a comfort level in that hand. The scar tissue had not completely released, and so therefore there was a strength element only that he was uncomfortable with," he added.

The Associated Press reported that Jennings made the announcement last Tuesday before a 4–2 regular season series opener loss to the Tampa Bay Rays.

Before getting injured, the 25-year-old right fielder played in 74 games and was hitting .265, with 27 home runs and 67 runs batted in (RBIs) in the 2015 season.

Stanton's home run and RBI count were leading the league before he suffered the injury.

The 2014 Silver Slugger Award winner was also voted as an All-Star starter in this season's All-Star game but the injury prevented him from participating in the event.

Miami will play against Tampa Bay for the last game of their series. After that, they will participate in a three-game series against the Philadelphia Phillies which will officially end another unsuccessful campaign.
